How to Calculate a Tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the pre-tax bill amount by the tip percentage (as a decimal). Add the result to the bill for the total. To split evenly, divide the total by the number of people.

In the US, standard tipping ranges are: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, 20–25% for excellent service. Tipping customs vary significantly by country — in Japan, tipping is not customary; in Australia, it is optional but appreciated.

Tip Calculation Formula

Tip Amount = Bill × Tip% / 100 Total = Bill + Tip Amount Per Person = Total / Number of People

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no universal rule. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically more accurate but the difference is small. Many people simply tip on the total bill for convenience. In high-tax cities, some prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount.
Standard US tip rates in 2025: Restaurants (18–20%), delivery drivers (15–20%), baristas ($1–2 per drink), bartenders ($1–2 per drink or 15–20%), hotel housekeeping ($2–5 per night), taxi/rideshare (15–20%), hair stylists (15–20%). Tipping practices vary significantly by service type and location.
To calculate 20% mentally: move the decimal point one place left (10% of the bill) then double it. For a $85 bill: 10% = $8.50, doubled = $17.00 for a 20% tip. For 15%, find 10% then add half of that: $8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75.
Most restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity for groups of 6 or more. If not, it's usually simplest to add the tip to the total before splitting — everyone pays equally for both the food and the service. If people ordered very differently, separate checks or an app like Splitwise may be fairer.
