How Ovulation Works

Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period, regardless of cycle length. For a 28-day cycle, that is day 14. For a 32-day cycle, it is day 18. The fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself, as sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract.

Ovulation Day = Cycle Length - 14 Fertile Window = Days (Ovulation - 5) to Ovulation Day

How to Use This Ovulation Calculator

Using our free ovulation calculator is simple:

  1. Enter the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP)
  2. Select your average cycle length (most women have 28-day cycles)
  3. Click Calculate to see your estimated ovulation date

The calculator uses Naegele's rule — ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next period starts. Your fertile window includes the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself.

Ovulation Calculation Formula

Ovulation Day = Cycle Length − 14 days Fertile Window Start = Ovulation Day − 5 days Fertile Window End = Ovulation Day (day of ovulation)

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and your average cycle length (typically 28 days). The calculator will estimate your ovulation day (14 days before your next period) and show your fertile window — the 6 days when conception is most likely.
This provides an estimate based on average cycle patterns. Ovulation can vary by several days based on stress, illness, travel, and other factors. For more precision, track basal body temperature (BBT), use ovulation predictor kits (OPK), or monitor cervical mucus changes.
The fertile window is typically 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. The most fertile days are the 2–3 days leading up to and including ovulation. Sperm can survive 3–5 days in the reproductive tract; the egg survives only 12–24 hours after release.
The best time to conceive is during the 2–3 days before ovulation (peak fertility). Having intercourse every other day during this window gives the best chance. Unlike the fertile window, the highest conception rates occur 1–2 days before ovulation when cervical mucus is most receptive to sperm.
