What Are Working Days?

Working days (also called business days) are Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and public holidays. They are the standard unit for professional deadlines, delivery estimates, legal response periods, and project timelines.

This calculator counts Monday–Friday days between two dates. You can optionally exclude approximate US federal holidays. Because holiday dates vary by year (some are "observed" on the nearest Monday), the holiday exclusion is an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical year has approximately 260–262 working days (365 calendar days minus 104 weekend days). After the 10–11 US federal holidays, net working days are approximately 250–251. Exact numbers depend on what day of the week January 1 falls.
Five business days means five Monday-through-Friday days, excluding weekends. If something ships Monday, 5 business days later is the following Monday. If it ships Wednesday, it's the following Wednesday. Holidays within that window extend the timeline by one day each.
Legal deadlines in the US often specify 'calendar days' or 'business days' explicitly. Court rules (like the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure) use calendar days for deadlines of 30+ days and business days for shorter periods, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays. Always check the specific rule applicable to your deadline.
Not automatically β€” it depends on the contract, legal rule, or policy. Many contracts specify whether public holidays count. This calculator provides the option to exclude US federal holidays. For international business, clarify which country's holidays apply.
